  I agree with Rob. About a year ago, a friend of mine was in a similar situation. I had recommended that he check out our club sponsor Bike Authority. He shopped around and ended up buying from Bike Authority for numerous reasons. Investing in a nice road bike will take you through your early years of triathlon and serve you well for years and years. If your budget just doesn't allow new, there are used road bikes on Craig's List. Just be aware there are different size frames to fit your dimensions. Buying new, they'll fit you to the proper bike frame size. Buying used is a bit of a guess.

  Matt, I would buy a used road bike. A new roadie for $1200-1500 will be very low end and probably not something you'll keep forever. Spend up to $1 k for a quality used road bike and you'll have a solid foundation. If you choose later to upgrade or go for a Tri bike you will be able to recover a good part of your investment. If you want a new road bike there are tons of shops local to you that carry all the top brands. If you want a new Tri bike, Bike Authority is the place.

  I prefer Bike authority but I think any of the shops mentioned here are great. I’ve donated a couple times to the Ohio City Bike co op. In fact I was there a couple weeks ago (unloading some old frames) and noticed they had some higher end bikes, and at least one set of HED tubular race wheels (not sure what condition). If you’re in the market for used, they might be worth a visit.

  I've had two bikes fit by Mike at Bike Authority and one by Jim Baldesare who fits out of a private studio near Kent (contact info is on the wobblenaught page). I'd recommend either. Mike is more of a numbers and measurements guy, JB is a lot more subjective. JB is also more expensive, and unlike Bike Authority, not a CTC sponsor.
