  Can anyone recommend a masonry contractor that is very experienced with brickwork issues on older homes (i.e, not just tuckpointing but deterioration/spalling)? We've had several quotes so far, and they've been all over the place—not just in cost but in extent of repairs recommended. Or does anyone know of a builder or inspector with expertise in masonry work who could give an impartial assessment (for a fee, obviously)? Thanks so much for any recommendations!

  Also, I have talked with this contractor several times at various old house venues (though not had a need to use them yet) and they seem like they know their stuff about old houses. They are very cautious about matching mortar to the original hardness/softness (because the mortar should be softer than the brick, and old bricks are softer than new bricks, etc). In any case, I suspect they are not cheap, but I would also have full faith in their methods. http://www.marionrestoration.com/
