A cork oak! How about a Coast Live Oak or Blue Oak or other CA native trees and shrubs? When we think about use of drought resistant plants in CA, our priority list should include our own palette of CA native plants. Ceanothus, manzanita, toyon, carpenteria, desert olive, desert willow, desert mallow, lemonade berry, sugar bush, buckwheat, CA wildflowers, sages and the like. These plants support our native pollinators, birds and other wildlife. Sure we should consider rockrose (cistus), salvia's from other zones: but first and foremost consider those plants native to the California floristic province!

  Hello! I'm wondering if I can get some recommendations for native shade trees that are fairly fast growing, don't have invasive roots, won't get too crazy big, and don't produce a lot of pollen. Too tall an order? The tree is for a school garden that is south facing and just lost its only shade giving tree. Thanks!

  I assume if you are in Claremont, you are familiar with Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, the largest native plant garden in the state. They may have some ideas or native trees you can look at. Also this tool: http://calscape.cnps.org

  Hello everyone ! I am looking for some advice about what types of native California trees would be good at my house. I live in the west end of the San Fernando Valley. I had a drought resistant garden put in by a specialist company. The garden is stones with drought tolerant plants - most of which are not natives. After a hot summer and continuing drought, some of the non-native plants died. I have removed them. Instead of putting 8-10 new plants to fill in the gaps, I think putting in 2-3 smallish trees/large bushes would look better. Suggestions?
