About us
Red Wing Youth Outreach is a non-profit organization serving youth ages 16-21 throughout Goodhue and Wabasha Counties. The mission of our organization is to provide intervention, life skills education, and mentoring for adolescents at risk of not graduating and facing serious challenges in their transition to healthy adulthood. The program name we use is Inspiring Tomorrow’s Leaders and the goal of this program is to give what we call “opportunity youth” the support and education they need to become self-sufficient and to lead positive and productive lives. Our program has a blend of six main program service categories including individual life coaching, group and individual independent living skills training, work experience and social enterprise experience, mental health support groups, chemical dependency support groups, and Big City Mountaineers experiential learning. More information on each of these areas is shared below.
Our agency currently serves a combination of approximately 100 youth per year throughout Goodhue and Wabasha counties. For 20 years, Red Wing Youth Outreach has played a unique role in the Red Wing community as an agency that not only works with students in school, but after-hours as well. In 1992, the Red Wing Community Advisory Team, a coalition of local agency representatives and business, school, and city leaders assembled to address chemical abuse problems among the youth in our community. The coalition determined that the chemical abuse problems persisted because the conditions contributing to them persisted. The group determined that a local youth-worker outreach program was needed to counter-balance disengaged parents, broken homes, and negative adult influences. In 1993, Red Wing Youth Outreach was born.
Our first outreach worker was made possible thanks to a grant by the Red Wing School District, the City of Red Wing and the Minnesota Department of Education. In 1997, we added a second outreach worker and established... show more
offices in the schools. We incorporated as a nonprofit in 2003 and since then have expanded to include a third outreach worker and year-round programming.
Our total agency budget for 2013 is $212,310. We currently utilize our Healthy Transitions and Homeless Prevention grant for approximately $69,700 which means that $142,610 of our 2013 budget is revenue from local foundations, private donors, and fundraising. Our projected revenue for 2014 is $190,103.50, which shows a slight decrease from last year. We are hopeful that this funding will add additional resources to our funding so we are able to continue the current level of service that we have maintained. We have also recently received two new funding sources through local non-profit organizations, so we are hoping to grow our program in order to serve more youth. All of our other funding sources are supplemental to our HTHP funding, which we consider our “bread and butter” due to the amount of funding as well as the nature of the funding. All of our programs are centered around the youth that are eligible for this program. Red Wing Youth Outreach specializes in working with youth eligible for this program and focuses on youth who are often “falling through the cracks.” Our organization works with youth who have been determined at-risk and desperately need intervention services. We currently have three workers with the following background:
Mandy Arden is the Independent Life Skills case manager and our newly appointed Program Director. She has studied psychology at California Southern University, professional child day care at Professional Career Development Institute and accounting at Minneapolis Business College. Her past experience with youth includes work at the Minnesota Correctional Facility as a corrections officer, Youth Enrichment League as an extracurricular activities teacher and the Ark of Bethany Church as a teacher. Mandy has also volunteered with Goodhue County Social Services, River Valleys Girl Scouts, Connecting Connections, and as an elementary classroom helper. Her leadership achievements include serving as a board member for the National Alliance on Mental Illness, HOPE Coalition, and a committee member of Goodhue and Wabasha County Homeless Response Teams.
Desiree Juaire is the Independent Life Skills Co-Facilitator. She is currently studying Social Work at Rochester Community/Technical College. She started as a volunteer, but due to her ability to connect with youth and her previous experience as a youth participant of Red Wing Youth Outreach, she was hired to co-facilitate groups meetings and to coordinate community volunteer opportunities for youth.
Josh Terrio is a case manager for the Inspiring Tomorrow’s Leaders program. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota State-Mankato studying Law Enforcement. Josh also spent a few semesters studying Special Education in Mankato. His past experience with youth includes work at a teen group home as a Resident Counselor, ACES after care school program as a paraprofessional and Goodhue County Court Services where he spent four months interning with juvenile probation. Josh also volunteered in the Big Brother/ Big Sister program, mentored at risk high school aged youth, coached youth football, basketball and baseball as well as volunteered some of his time refereeing youth basketball and umpiring youth baseball. Josh’s strong will to mentor and guide young people in need of finding the inner guidance and responsibility to their life as well as his patience, ability to establish rapport, communication skills; along with his passion for working with youth in the context of their community, school, family and foster relationship makes him a perfect fit to help the youth of Red Wing transition from high school to college and beyond.
Below is a description of each of the six main program areas listed above:
A. The Individual Life Coaching program is highly personalized for Red Wing High School and Red Wing Alternative High School students, aged 15-18, who are most at risk of not graduating from high school. Students meet one hour weekly with a professional life coach to overcome blocks that are interfering with school success. Current outcomes include: 75% of youth improve their GPA; 85% of youth increase their attendance; 80% of youth increase their motivation, engagement and personal awareness. Life coaching is partnering with youth in a thought provoking and creative process. Our certified life coaches inspire youth to overcome fears, identify values, set goals and take action in their life. The primary goal of coaching is to increase leadership ability, engagement and personal awareness. Individual Life Coaching will be expanding to include participating college attending students. The support, education and case management that occurs during the coaching process will allow the youth to have a support system in place that assists with academic counseling, mentoring, academic enrichment activities, tutoring, career awareness and exploring, and financial literacy education.
B. The Independent Living Skills Program provides youth with information to help them as they go out into the world. The program is designed for 16-21 year old participants who need help with the transition process from high school to college. The program consists of a 12-week independent living skills group, followed by individual case management. Youth will attend life skills groups facilitated by Youth Outreach staff and community volunteers. The topics that will be covered include: financial aid assistance, post-secondary education, apartment living/dorm life, money management, emotional intelligence, team building, healthy choices, relationship building, social etiquette, study habits, supportive connections, job readiness and work experience. Currently 35% of youth that have participated in our independent living skills program, that would previously not have graduated high school, are actually enrolled in college.
C. Bling N’ Blue Jeans is the retail store that Red Wing Youth Outreach owns and operates. Students in this program complete a rigorous curriculum of independent living skills as well as individual social enterprise education.
D. A partnership with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has lead us to the development of our mental health support group. NAMI has provided Red Wing Youth Outreach’s staff and youth with training to facilitate our own youth peer-to-peer support group. This group is highly attended by seniors and recent college enrollees. We are very interested in expanding this service to younger students.
E. Red Wing Youth Outreach offers a chemical dependency youth peer-to-peer support group that allows youth to open up in a safe environment and discuss how alcohol or drug use has affected their lives. A research based, cognitive-behavioral group program through Hazelton’s Teen Intervene is being used as an outline for this support group.
F. Big City Mountaineers is a transformative outdoor experience for youth ages 13-18. Red Wing Youth Outreach is the lead area agency for recruiting and arranging this exciting opportunity for area youth. Participants will be given the opportunity to experience day trips in canoeing and other outdoor activities in preparation for an eight day expedition into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. This activity helps youth gain self-esteem and self-sufficiency skills related to living independently and having the confidence to think about their future.
We feel that all youth deserve the skills and opportunities necessary to succeed, and we assist them with this by providing individual life skills training and individual work experience, as well as experiential group life skills training. All of our programming is based on researched curriculum through the Casey Life Skills programs. In addition, all of our youth workers use experiential learning with youth. The core of experiential learning is building relationships with our youth through hands-on and engaging activities. We try to bring youth to the next level of citizenship; we like to think that not only will they know where to find housing and a job but they will also have relationships with positive, caring adults, and skills that will last a lifetime. Our Inspiring Tomorrow’s Leaders program currently serves approximately 200 youth per year. The barriers to high school graduation and college enrollment that these youth possess are addressed in each session of the program, including academic, social, financial issues, transportation, skills development, housing, relationships with positive and caring adults, budgeting, decision making, and emotional intelligence. Being able to address these barriers prior to enrollment in post-secondary education prepare a youth for the transition process. Continuing to address them and overcome them prepare a youth for successful college completion.
