  Susan - I think Mary's at Falls Cottage would be an excellent place to take your friends for a bite to eat downtown. To give someone a truly authentic Greenville experience, I'd suggest hitting up as many local places (vs. chain restaurants, stores, etc.) Obviously, checking out the shops on Main St. and maybe venturing out to downtown Greer and downtown Travelers Rest would be an excellent way to enjoy the day.
