About us
Ruff House Rescue is a volunteer-based Animal Welfare Organization located in Freeport, NY. (To volunteer: www.ruffhouserescue.org/volunteerapplication)
We have rescued over 6000 homeless pets since inception in 2009.
Ruff House is not an open intake shelter, however we do assist families with re-homing their pets whenever possible.

Ruff House Rescue's adoption center and kennel is a small space that serves to both house and care for our adoptable pets while hosting adoptions every weekend either at our Island Park location or offsite as listed on our events tab here on Facebook and on our website. We frequently host adoption events at Petco and Petsmart locations. Adoptions held in Island Park are by appointment and we ask potential adopters to submit an application in advance for review so we can match adopters with their perfect pet!

We are actively seeking Volunteers for the following positions:
VOLUNTEER - Did you know Volunteering can save and enrich your life AND will help save the life of an animal on death row!
VOLUNTEER AT HOME: You do not need to live locally to assist with the following tasks!
1. Adoption Counselors — volunteers process adoption applications, conduct phone interviews, call references.
2. Post Adoption Events - volunteers post our weekly adoption events on local online sites: Craigslist, local Patch’s, local Facebook groups
3. Grant Research and Writing - find grant opportunities and apply for them!
4. Post-Adoption Counselors - volunteers check in with adopters to see how adopted pets are doing in their new homes
5. Foster Coordinators - keep in contact with foster families for vetting and adoptions
6. Garage Sale Host - collect items and host garage sales to raise money for RHR
7. Email responder - help us reply to the... show more hundreds of emails we receive daily!
8. Fundraiser Scouts - check online opportunities weekly for fundraising
9. Owner Surrender Coordinator - respond to owner surrender requests and post on social media
10. Are you interested in graphic art design and animals? You can design and send out Email blasts on our Constant Contact Mail list.
11. Social Media Posting on our Pinterest, Instagram, and Facebook sites
VOLUNTEER LOCALLY ON LONG ISLAND
12. Vetting Transport - volunteers take our pups/cats to and from our local vets (Rockville Centre, Hewlett, Merrick, etc)
13. New Arrival Transport - volunteers pick up dogs from their freedom rides usually in NJ at Vince Lombardi Rest Stop on Saturdays and bring them to our facility in Freeport (transport vehicle provided when needed)
14. Inventory and Shipping - volunteers keep track of our merchandise inventory and mail out orders
15. Thrift Store - Vounteer sales position open 7 days. Help organize and run our thrift store, ThriiftyPawz@gmail.com located in East Rockaway on Centre Avenue. Contact Hara for more information and hours 516-458-6793
16. Posting Flyers - hang flyers in local establishments all over Long Island
17. Install and collect from Donation Boxes in local stores
18. ASPCA - become TNR certified (easy online video) and bring dogs/cats to and from the spay/neuter appointments in Glendale, Queens NY
19. CAT CARE VOLUNTEERS: Care for our cats at Petco Oceanside, or Petsmart Glen Cove!
20. VOLUNTEER AT OUR FACILITY IN FREEPORT - please submit a volunteer application on our website www.ruffhouserescue.org/volunteerapplication for dog walking or kennel cleaning
A. Kennel Cleaners: help needed daily mornings and evenings. Help out cleaning and or walking our adorable adoptables
B. Dog Walkers:help needed daily to walk our pets
21. Photographers or Videographers needed. The key to helping our dogs/cats find wonderful homes is fantastic pictures and videos. Videographers: great videos show off each dog’s personality, size, and energy level and give potential adopters real insight into each pet
