The carpet type will determine your cleaning results. If it's wool I wouldn't use too much water, or an off the shelf cleaning products because many have oxygen based bleaching agents which will ruin it. If it's had loads used on it it will need flushing out to clear it of PH and level it off because adding more to it could leave you with a more dirty carpet in a short time. Try not to put loads on it because chemicals can react with each other which will give that patch a funny colour.
