In December 2014, the Humane Society of South Carolina was the recipient of a very exciting donation thanks to a volunteer group known as “Fido Fixers.” Fido Fixers was founded in Greenwich, CT by Susan Maounis, Lisa Wysocki, and Susan Steinbert. These three special women are extremely active members of animal rescue efforts. They were deeply concerned about the endless number of unwanted pets surrendered to shelters, especially in the Southeastern United States. They saw there were many groups who work diligently to rescue these animals, but knew that despite of these tireless efforts, many animals were still left without forever homes and ultimately euthanized.
These three advocates took this concern and turned concern into action! Their vision was to try and end the problem of animal abuse, neglect and overpopulation by partnering with local community organizations to use mobile spay/neuter clinics in rural communities and set up low-cost clinics that could reach to these underserved areas.
The Humane Society is fortunate to have received one of only three Fido Fixers clinics in the nation. This mobile clinic is making low-cost spay/neuter surgeries a reality in communities throughout the Midlands. Fido Fixers began surgeries in January, and is reaching rural communities in Calhoun, Orangeburg, Sumter, Lexington and Richland counties. We are looking to expand our reach even further! The mobile clinic is able to provide surgeries, immunizations, and other services to patients in convenient locations, to make spay/neuter services accessible to more and more people.
Our deepest thanks go out to Susan, Lisa and Suzanne for making mobile spay/neuter a reality in South Carolina. With their help, The Humane Society can make an even bigger difference reducing the population of unwanted animals.
