  Affordable childcare/neighborhoods close to MIT? I'm moving to Boston in November to start a postdoc at MIT. At that point we will have a three month old infant. I have looked into daycare centers in Cambridge and found prices of around $2500 per month. To complicate the matter we won't move there until at most a few weeks before my start date, so we don't have the option of touring small in-home daycares and don't know exactly where we will be living. Here are my two questions: 1. Which neighborhoods/suburbs close to MIT would you recommend moving to? Ideally I would be able to commute by public transit, it is safe, and living costs are reasonable. 2. What options do I have for daycare? Are some neighborhoods significantly cheaper? How can I find an affordable good quality daycare if I'm not in town prior to the start date?

  Daycare here is very expensive. That said, try looking at home based daycares - they are usually cheaper (we pay $9.50/hr vs options that were $2000-2500/month) and more flexible (easier to do less than 5 days a week and only pay for the days you go). The eec has a website to search for providers - www.eec.state.ma.us/childcaresearch/earlyedumap.aspx and you can also download a list of all licensed providers www.eec.state.ma.us/childcaresearch/active providers.aspx I recommend calling and calling and calling - for whatever reason, daycare providers are shitty about being responsive.
