  Hi. I've had erbs palsy in my right arm since birth. Unfortunately we didn't even get a name for what I had or anything until I was in middle school because the doctors always just told my mom it was a birth defect even though she knew it was "caused by" the doctor who delivered me. We both almost died during my birth. I'm 24 years old and I've never been able to straighten my arm and I've never been given any insight on if there are surgeries that can help me. I remember in middle school that I had to do occupational therapy and that an orthopedic told my mom and I that surgery would likely paralyze my arm instead of help me get better movement etc. Does anyone have any information on surgeries or anything that would be beneficial to me? I really have a hard time believing that the surgery would paralyze my arm....

  Our daughter Stella, who has Erb's Palsy (Left OBPI), turned 4 last week. We started early with PT both at home and with professionals and have been regularly visiting Scottish Rite's Brachial Plexus Clinic in Atlanta (CHOA) since she was a few months old. We have had quite a bit of success, but Stella's arm is still internally rotated. She can get just over 90 degrees when arching her back and cannot get her arm overhead without pulling it up with the other arm. Just this year, Dr. Allan Peljovich at Scottish Rite said that he thought Stella would greatly benefit from a tendon transfer surgery (Hoffer Technique). We are planning to move ahead with this surgery and have an MRI scheduled for the middle of next week. We have a few questions we would like to put out there to the group 1. Have any of you or your children had the Hoffer tendon transfer with Dr. Peljovich or another doctor? If so we would love to hear what you think and what the results are. 2. Has anyone seen/experienced any downsides from this surgery? 3. If we were to get a second opinion (we would have to do it quickly) who would you recommend for us to get it from? Thank you!

  You can send video to Dr Nath (www.drnathbrachialplexus.com) and I believe to Shriners in Philly. I would definitely get a second opinion. Have you looked into mod quad surgery? That helps immensely regarding overhead movement.

It looks like you have specialist doctors and so much more info etc in America- we don't have anything like that here in Oz(not that I have found yet anyway!) My son is 6 next month and has an OBPI and has just had his 6th op on his right armx Any info would be great.

  Hi Natalie and Clare - my daughter was born in Ashford, SA and we eventually had to fly to the US for treatment. Our Ped (Dr. Chris Munt) was great, but the neurosurgeons in Adelaide were not helpful at all. My daughter missed the window to get the nerves repaired through nerve grafting, so she ended up having to wait to get the Mod Quad at age 3 and Triangle tilt at age 7. Dr. Nath performed both her surgeries. He is the leader in the world for OB Brachial Plexus Care. His website is www.drnathbrachialplexus.com/ He and his staff are absolutely wonderful.
