  hey everyone. after my volunteering project, i was thinking about backpacking from johannesburg, south africa to cape town, south africa, for 2-3 wks in december. Has anyone ever backpacked in South Africa before? would it be safe for me as a 20 year old female to go by myself (i don't really have any experience). i've heard of a lot of mixed responses some say south africa is too dangerous to go alone as a female, others say it is very easy to backpack and just to use common sense to avoid crime? any thoughts or tips on backpacking SA? should i even attempt it or try a tour company (if so any recommendations, i would prefer something cheap)? thanks so much!

  I backpacked alone for the same period of time, met plenty of other lone female backpackers, and I never felt unsafe. I was overwhelmed by the willingness of the hostel providers to help me get where I needed to go safely in a way I've never experienced in any other country. The best advice I can give for travelling South Africa alone is to ask your accommodation in advance how to get their location - they generally pick you up for free from the bus stop and one B and B owner drove me to and from the wedding I attended which was my reason for travelling there in the first place. Everyone advised against taking trains, so buses only. You could try www.bazbus.com which is a hop on, hop off backpacker bus service. I didn't use them because their schedule didn't fit my dates, but you might have better luck. I met others using them who seemed to be happy with the service. I did short tours in my selected locations provided by the hostels. One I'd totally recommend is Drakensberg Adventures organised out of Sani Lodge. I did look for an overall tour but found the demand at the time of year I went wasn't high enough so couldn't find any options to fit my travel dates or I would have paid through the roof. And then at the hostels, I met other people to travel with for other parts of my journey and to do tours with. I also highly recommend a stop in Wilderness at the Fairy Knowe Backpackers Lodge. One final comment to add, I found South Africa generally a cheap place to travel, except for the transport costs. If I could have done it slower then I could have saved a fortune in transport costs, but in that limited time and trying to cover everything I wanted to do (mountains, safari, beaches) then I had to do a couple of internal flights and even car hire which was obviously a lot more expensive than long bus journeys!
