Can anyone recommend a good hotel/motel in Savannah, near the historic district?

You will love it! It's beautiful everywhere! It's not as compact as everything is in New Orleans. It's pretty spread out with the 22 squares and all. But the DOT is only free in the historic district, so you want to be as close to that as possible. Pack some good walking shoes! And you have to eat at Ms. Wilke's boarding house! It's actually the basement of her boardinghouse with a communal dining room! It's a wonderful experience with scrumptious southern cooking! Very worth the wait. There is a great show called Savannah Live at the historic Savannah Theatre ( http://www.savannahtheatre.com/shows/savannah-live/) that I highly recommend since you enjoy music like I do. I will also recommend Old Time Trolley Tours. They offer a two day pass where you can get on and off at your leisure throughout both days to visits sites like the cathedral, historic homes, city market and all 22 squares. Most of their tour guides are fun and extremely knowledgable about Savannah and it's history. Be prepared to spend a little extra on food if you don't have a kitchen in your room. There is very little fast food in this area and some of the restaurants are very princely!!! As you can tell I LOVED Savanah and have been talking to Steven about moving there when he retires. Oh, there is also no free parking anywhere so check on that with your hotel, most charge extra for parking. They have a few parking decks for public parking but again it costs money. If you are going to do any fancy meals I highly recommend The Pirate House and Churchill's Pub. They were fabulous! The fried pickles at Spanky's on RiverStreet were to die for. It's not a cheap vacation, but you can have fun on a budget! Research, research, research! I loved it and you will too. Oh you have to see Bonneventure Cemetery and Wormsloe Plantation too! Beautiful. I could go on and on......lol!
