Can anyone help my friend Andrew Homzy?
Hello Enrico,
I’m tracing the evolution of three rags which were adopted into the jazz repertoire - Panama, High Society and That’s A Plenty. I have copies of the original published orchestrations for all three. It’s fascinating to see how they were altered -
The earliest jazz recordings of Panama & That’s A Plenty were done by the New Orleans Rhythm Kings - 1922 & 1923 -
High Society was done by both Oliver Naylor and Jelly Roll Morton in 1924
Do you have - or know where I can find - a recording of That's A Plenty & High Society by Prince's Band?
Are there any recordings of Panama made prior to that of the NORK? Prince or Ossman?
Are there any other versions of these three pieces recorded before the first jazz interpretations?
Rick Benjamin does not have these recordings. I wrote Peter Dilg last month, but never heard from him.
Any help or leads will be greatly appreciated. Could my questions go out to your group: Music of 1890-1925 (Pioneer recording artists)?
Cheers,
Andrew Homzy
