This isn't quite Viking, since I believe it was standard for the Northmen to use three strips of iron on the back of a shield, but I thought a few of you may be able to help. I noticed that a few earlier shields made from planks didn't have anything to reenforce the shield or hold planks together, and instead simply had the planks butted together (some of the Hjortspring Bog shields and the oval shields from Duras-Europos are like that, and probably others I'm unaware of). How would you get a shield like that to stay together, and would anyone know how to build one?
