  Thank you both so much! I called Sears yesterday afternoon, and the earliest they could give me an appointment was Thursday. I called one of the 24-hour services - AA-1 Repairs, 202/783-2055 - and the repairman came out yesterday early evening (Saturday). He diagnosed it being low on freon, which he needs to order and likely can't get till tomorrow (Monday). He was very nice, and didn't have me pay the $49.95 charge for last night till the work's done - we'll see what it ends up being. And I'll keep the reference for Silver Spring Appliance
