I want to go to the hobart welding school after I graduate but that means moving to Ohio and I don't want to move that far just after graduating. I might go to coso but I won't be getting the full program at once like I would at a trade school. Any options or opinions anybody?

  Ryan - I've done quite a bit of research on this already, as you and myself are striving for the same field. It really depend on the field of welding you want to go into. Fabrication? Aerospace? Heavy Equipment? Oil rig? Underwater? Dont skimp out on yoru education and ju.st go to the closest school. I'll be going to Hobart in Ohio in a few years, and that is like epitome of trade school. Most people who graduate from Hobart already have jobs lined up before they're done. If you're really dead set on California though, I would recommend checking out The Fab School in Riverside. They have a welding course as well as a machining course that focuses on fabrication. So mainly Tig/Mig and pipe fitting.

I've welded here and there since I was younger (I'm now 21), and my dad has been welding all his life, not professionally or with any time type of schooling but he's good. I already have a pretty solid job( I'm also into landscaping) but I'm thinking of doing this on side for extra cash for now and maybe who knows it might turn into something bigger. What do you guys think would be better to do ? short term certs or go to a real school for this ? If so can anybody recommend and good schools in SoCal, I'm in the IE.

  Honestly? As someone who dropped a 9-5 to pursue mobile welding, it's an uphill struggle. And you have to be good. Not necessarily certified, but good. And good doest have to mean old. I'm barely 25. I also live in SoCal, in the IE. I started by doing small stuff to people's cars, and threw in mobile automotive repair. I've fixed fences, gates, roll cages, welded on and modified engine mounts. I've worked on heavy equipment, and I've welded stainless for Chili's, and if it was profitable enough, I'd get their required insurance and become a vendor (read: If I could also get into TGIF, or Woodranch, etc) The biggest issue is getting your foot in the door...and if you do get in, you better deliver. Good words and referrals might get you a job, but one pissed off customer can derail your business when you're starting out. And in the beginning it's not going to be all sunshine and rainbows. Money will be tight and jobs can be difficult to find. You're on the right track to make it a side project first, because your 9-5 will keep you up on your bills, and hold you over the slow times. Also, decide how much work you want to be able to do, and decide before you even start. Too small a vehicle, can't carry parts. Too big, wasted space. Like I've said in another post, my rig has a crane, generator, compressor, work deck, bottle rack, mig, tig, and stick welder. Chop saw, saws all, skill saw, hand tools, impacts to 3/4 drive, plasma, oxyfuel, work lights, drills, hardware, wiring tools, clamps, scrap metal, 300' of welding cable, and tie down straps. But I want to have everything I need to work on heavy equip, and then weld stainless inside a restaurant, and fab parts on site. I've put my mobile business back on hold (or at least weekends) and took a steady job at a paving company locally, where I get a nice paycheck (but not as large as some of the welding jobs I've picked up) where I do everything from tracking down hydraulic leaks, to welding up buckets, to wrenching on super 10's and f550's If you want to learn to weld, but you're already mechanically inclined, go to a community college. Chaffey, RCC, and some of the other local community colleges have good welding programs. The fab school, Wyotech, and uti are all great...but also expensive. Final words, get as much practice as you possibly can, and make sure you can say "I'd pay me for that weld" when it counts.
