Do any of you use ranitidine long term to alleviate acid and hind gut discomfort?
A little history--
I've had my mare, Secret, since April. She is not OTTB, but Hanoverian/ TB. This group was recommended to me by my trainer as having a wealth of horse owners who have dealt with ulcers so that's why I seek your advice.
Secret exhibited all the signs of ulcers when she arrived so I started her on ulcerguard per my vets recommendation. After 3 weeks, no improvement was observed on the ground or under saddle so it was advised to switch to a combination of ranitidine and sucralfate to treat the hindgut. She made huge improvements!
She finished the prescribed treatment almost 2 weeks ago and I am seeing her old behaviors come back under saddle. Tense, won't release her rib cage and just generally cranky.
RiteTrac was recommended as a supplement to curb discomfort by my vet but I honestly cannot afford it, I wish I could.
I have her on a handful of rolled oats so she will eat her raspberry leaves and hay in front of her most of the time.
I will discuss this with my vet!
Any experience or advice?
