Just buy the irons! If you got planes and woodwork experience. The whole hype about Jap planes is a super sharp, thick plane iron. When the rest of the body is wood and brass! They can be customized per your needs. I think you should at least try making one of your own. Even if it fails and looks and performs horrible. You can say at least you tried. I believe in you!

Japanwoodworker.com Japanese planes work by pulling, not pushing. It takes practice to get them to perform correctly but they can do phenomenal things on a piece of wood.
