Who has information on a World War II German prison camp in the Alma/Holdrege area?
Juanita U. replied:
I will check it out. Some of the older students may know. I will ask Carol Wynne as she taught kindergarten.
Richard W. replied:
The prisoners were housed in the old schoolhouse north across the street from the 'new' school -- and it was a stucco building. I had some classes there while in grade school when the dam construction crews brought an increased student load to the school system. When the prisoners were there, the building was enclosed with a fence and I recall accompanying my father, who spoke German, when he would go to the camp and talk with the prisoners through the fence. He also assisted them in getting their letters posted to their family in Germany. My brothers, Bob and Don Westerbeck recall working with some of the prisoners in the meat-packing plant during the war.
Hello to all,
I'm interested in planning some bicycle/camping trips in our fair state this summer. Can anybody recommend a good place camp near some long bike paths?
