Benakis Museum. Great collection, great food for lunch. Excellent views of the city from the restaurant. Even a decent giftshop.
Claudia K. replied:
Benaki Museum is nice, but I found their gift shop to be a bit pricy.
Kerry K. replied:
Lynn Sims, everything above, plus... kapnikarea cafe (live rembetiko, tasty food, good drinks... the only thing missing is the view of the acropolis, blocked when they put a building up next to it.)

Following for the Thai suggestions - but Omaira Gill, for Indian, have you tried Mirch www.mirch.gr in Monastiraki? Right on Ermou - if you go out of the train station and turn left on Ermou, you'll walk right by it in a block or two. I went there first with a friend who grew up in India - the food is soooo good and SOOO CHEAP and they have the best beer selection in Greece!

The Rouan Thai on Notara in Piraeus is decent, although it doesn't look much.
Just about anywhere in Greece is child-friendly. The Acropolis Museum has child-specific exhibits.

Smashing cafe just off the Acropolis called "Smile". They have a Facebook page and are well worth a visit.

Well, not far from Smile is a restaurant called Mani-Mani (more up-market but very nice ambience), which specialises in the cuisine of that region. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g189400-d695929-Reviews-Mani_Mani-Athens_Attica.html

I would really like to dine at Mani Mani. That's my parents' part of Greece. Loved the menu.

Birthday for kids or adults....? It would be nice to support a locally owned and operated restaurant than a chain....O Diomatari in Ano Petralona is exceptional and reasonably priced. Shaded roof top plus inside dining. Authentic and delicious Greek food and about a 6 - 7 minute walk from the elekriko. If interested I can send you a map.
