Rebecca Patterson Bousman, as a landlord myself, it costs $35-$45 to do a credit check, plus the time it takes. Landlords don't charge this fee to make a profit, they do it to cover their butts as many people are not great tenants. Also if the tenant is willing to pay $35 it shows true interest. The real questions to ask landlords is "what will it take to get this place" "what are you looking for in a tenant". And most of all, express how much you love the place and can see yourself there a long time. Standing out of the crowd as someone who loves it is huge.
