Fairly new to the area... Just wondering who people use as a vet and why. Also wondering if there are any tack shops in the area (other than Greenhawk in Barrie).
Hilary M. replied:
I use North Simcoe Vet Service in Vasey, they are great:)
Petrina M. replied:
Tai Deluna (especially for teeth floating), Dr. Gallagher from Nottawasaga Vets, Dr. Drew from Honeywood and Warder and Dr. Mallu from Postons (haven't used her in a few years though so don't know if she's still practicing in the area).
Susan C. replied:
Drew Hunniset is our vet also. I am new to horses and he explained everything while floating Tarrah's teeth.

Thornbury Vet Hospital is amazing. I use Justin Levy and his prices are great and he's not a pushy vet. His specialty is orthopedics
My brother has a large mixed breed that has ruptured his cruciate. I know it is around $3500 but thought I would ask if anyone has found a good reasonable vet to do this...
Cheryl S. replied:
Dr John at Caledon Mountain Veterinary Hospital.. He is the Best!!!
Stacey H. replied:
Luxating patella and torn cruciate would present differently and any good vet would know the difference easily. Either way, Dr. John did our late labs surgery about 10 years ago, he's somewhat of a pioneer from what I understand. He's ethical and obviously highly recommended by my family and others.
Deanna G. replied:
This is what got repaired on my friend's husky mix by Dr. John. She made a full recovery. (:
Kerry B. replied:
Dr Isakow at 404 veterinary emerg hospital is exerlent! in new market.
Andréa V. replied:
FYI torn ACL's are NOT diagnosed via x Rays.. Sedation and manipulation what ultimately diagnosis it. X Rays are taken to see condition of hips and measure pre surgical angles for TPLO.
Yvonne F. replied:
Third on Dr. John (Brajkovich)! the clinic I worked for would bring him in for all our ortho surgeries, absolutely fantastic!
Kerry M. replied:
DR BJ BERESFORD at Amaranyth Vet Clinic. literally the best mobility vet in Ontario. She will let you know if he has ACTUALLY torn his cruciate. Vets love to "cry cruciate"
Deanna G. replied:
Board certified you will easily be looking at $4000. Dr John at Caledon Mountain (previously recommended) is NOT board certified in orthopedics (unless this has recently changed) but he seems to be very skilled at what he does. He did a complex repair on a friend's dogs pelvis that many vets wouldn't touch. I would recommend him, and his costs are much less, due to the lack of certification. http://www.caledonvet.com/Orthopedics.html Kerry I work in a clinic and I wouldn't say vets cry cruciate. It is VERY common - we call it the "weekend warrior" injury. Lots of fat, out of shape, poorly structured dogs that rip it up at the park once a week... bam, torn cruciate. Sometimes we can see some success with time but basically without surgery you are condemning to arthritis. My friend's mastiff had both cruciates repaired. They waited around a year to do the second one and it had become quite arthritic. She was only 3.
Barrie and area veterinarian recommendations I have 2 pooches who are due for a check up and some shots. I'm looking for a vet who excels in their practice, maybe you...

O'sulivans animal hospital in Letitia heights plaza. They are all excellent never have had a problem with them. They are also open 24 hrs for emergencies and don't have to pay out the ass like the other emergency vet clinics in Barrie.

I take mine to Barrie Veterinary on Bayfield. I've been taking pets there for 20+ years. Dr. Mudde (sp?) is my favorite, but I also really like Dr. Martin. They both really love animals.

My wife breeds cats as a hobby, and will only bring them to [Baywood Animal Hospital](http://baywoodanimalhospital.ca/). The vets and staff there are fantastic. Can't say enough good things about them. edit: I just realized that they have two locations. We go to the one in Midhurst (just north of Barrie off of Bayfield St). Although I'm sure both locations are run the same way, I don't have any personal experience with the Barrie location.
jaymurr replied:
Big Bay Point Animal Hospital was amazing with our cat. She's alive today because of them.
J-L-S replied:
Personally I use Barrie Vet on Bayfield because it is the closest to my house. They are very good and prices are good. That being said, my wife and I foster cats for Street Cats (local cat shelter) and as such we've used just about every vet in town for our fosters depending on who they send us to (a bunch of vets offer cheap services for them and they send us to whoever's available). The best vet that I have seen is Big Bay Animal Hospital on Big Bay Point. The staff is amazing, and more than one time I have seen them waive visit fees entirely for patients if it's something small (i.e. dog may have swallowed something, animal limping, weird behaviour) that only required a quick check-up.

Looking for a vet for floating and vaccines in the Midland area, before the end of May. Recommendations? :3
Fran S. replied:
we all look for the best price AND the best care obviously..unfortunately,in this area, the equine and large animal vets have gone out of practice leaving only one basically who has no competition...and like some doctors in the area,he only helps you out if you are a customer,ie"meds,needles,wormers,salves...which to me is not right..i shouldn't have to be a customer to buy a tube of Hibitaine, particularly at inflated prices..i rarely call a vet,but when i do,it was Dr. Gerry honeywood from Allandale..unfortuantely,like many of us old horsey people,he is not well, but his horse vet,a Dr. Ward, i believe,is excellent and he charges the same price for travel as north simcoe....my 2 cents..

ask for prices first..i always found Joe Rumney the most expensive..i like the fellow who works wih Allandale Vet Clinic...they were cheaper and came further but they didn't make two or three trips to get the job done..Drew is expensive to float teeth but he has all the equipment...i paid $250.00...sometimes a farrier will do it but i can't find one...
My sisters dog is in need of urgent surgery. He was hit by a car this morning and he's fractured his leg. If anyone had any resources that can help us please let me...

Alcona Vets for sure hands down, Dr. Paquette has been just amazing with both of our dogs. She gets right down on the floor with them and talks to them, they just love her. My Sheppard used to be afraid of vets but now she just walks right in. They are totally amazing there!.'
I know this is not horse related but does anyone know of any EARLY spay neuter vet clinics in the area! I am not local to Orrillia. Thanks :) if not appropriate please...
Kaitlin N. replied:
The Barrie SPCA spay and neuter clinic does them according to weight. I'm not 100% sure what the weight is now but it is a pretty early weight ! You'd have to call ask - 7057349882
