I'd be happy to pitch in but all I can afford right now is just a few bucks (they add up, though). I work from home so I lost my office and home to the fire and am just now getting settled enough to get back to work. All is well here. But I've gotten very interested in Kickstarter and am working on an idea to submit to them for funding. This organization has come across my radar several times in the last couple of years, always with good reviews and high recommendations. Sounds like your story is right up their alley. I bet this photography project would bring lots and lots of generous donations, especially if there's mention of losing the camera in the fire. You might get enough to cover travel expenses and spending money, too. If your project is funded, you won't need to repay the money but you will want to reward your benefactors with photographs of your overseas adventure. People around the world are expressing loads of sympathy and support for my fire experience; it's truly amazing how the goodness of the human spirit is being drawn to Bastrop County from all around the world. I bet you'd find dozens of total strangers eager to help you. I'm a writer and would be happy to help write your proposal. Just send me a private message if you're interested. Thanks!
