These guys came and did a quote for me on tanks and plumbing into toilet etc. They were lovely. They also ran the sausage sizzle at the sustainable living expo. http://www.pjtgreenplumbing.com.au/

Remember you get a rebate on your tank if you connect to the toilet- that helps offset the cost of the plumbing - makes sense if you connect the toilet at the same time you get the tanks - and you don't need a rainbank its not that hard to go out and check how much water is in the tank and have manual switch over- that should save you a bit. (Unfortunately the plumber who did mine has grown the business and only seems focused on commercial stuff theses days.) http://www.depi.vic.gov.au/water/saving-water/water-rebate-program

We connected our tank mid last year under the old rebate scheme and got $700 back which almost offset the plumbing installation cost of $900, connecting a toilet and washing machine outlet to the tank. This current round of rebates end mid 2015 and are more generous: The program has been extended until 30 June 2015 and changes include: Rainwater tank rebates have been increased to: $850 (2,000–3,999 litres connected to toilet and/or laundry) $1,300 (4,000 litres or greater connected to toilet or laundry) $1,500 (4,000 litres or greater and connected to toilet and laundry http://www.depi.vic.gov.au/water/saving-water/water-rebate-program We also have a manual switch over like Jodie describes.

Forgot to mention the plumbers we went with, http://www.hometogarden.com.au/about.html, Andy had only just moved out of the western suburbs but at the time was visiting the west frequently.
