Okay you guys- I need some major input here, okay? I love to paint, but I really struggle with composition. I can tell when it's off, but I don't know how to fix it....
Alexander M. replied:
http://s.hswstatic.com/gif/vincent-van-gogh-paintings-from-the-yellow-house-6.jpg In this Van Gogh, the flowers are the main attraction, right? And they're centered. However, they end two-thirds down the painting vertically, which makes them pleasing to the eye and maintains the rule of thirds! If you were to create a smaller (or even larger) dandelion beneath your center one, the two combined would take up two thirds of the image and give your eye that nice cold blue top third.
Alexander M. replied:
Firstly: This is a wonderful painting. I love what you've done with the background palette; it's very captivating. That sort of seafoam is gorgeous, and the dripping effects are nice. First thing I noticed: The flower seems too centered. "Rule of thirds" is repeated over and over and over for a reason. In paintings where you want the subject to FEEL like it's in the center, but don't want it to look funny, it's smack dab in the middle horizontally and nearly third to the top or bottom vertically (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e5/Magritte_TheSonOfMan.jpg). Maybe the flower would benefit from simply being moved to the left or right, or up or down? The palette of the flower isn't as strong as the background palette, and you have a very strong background palette to keep up with! I think it would benefit from higher contrast in the yellow bit (darken up the shadows with some blues?) and a darker green for the stem with some very yellow highlights. As is, it doesn't seem to fit. All that being said, you have a great thing going for you, and I hope to see it finished! Keep up the good work.
