The good news is, the house is not in imminient danger of exploding. The bad news is, we find ourselves in need of a contractor asap.
Can anyone recommend a RELIABLE...

In Royal Oak, Berkley, and surrounding communities we always, always use John of All Trades. They finished our friend's basement, and built their addition. They also did a huge amount of work on the rental house we own (all beautiful - I wish we'd known about them while we still lived in that house). I wish they came out by our main house. 248.840.0045

I'll recommend one of my fraternity brothers. I'd give you his phone number if my %&*^& iPhone didn't keep eating phone numbers. Tell him you're a friend of mine if you get ahold of him, and I'm sure he'll be honest with you about the schedule. https://www.facebook.com/gjcaswell?fref=ts
Any recommendations for roofing and heating and cooling contractors?
Ruth S. replied:
When we had to replace the furnace and hot water heater after the flood, we used Air Master on Coolidge at Wiltshire. Very nice and dependable. We had our roof redone and the company was very good but do you think I can remember the name. When I think of it I'll let you know. They are in Ferndale.

Pilot Heating Cooling was great and less expensive then other companies. A few of my neighbors also used them after the flood. Call Chris at 586-524-3870
