This guy can solve all your problems. I have ALC insurance through him. It's cheaper than the plans from German companies and accepted by the government. Also, it covers you when traveling in the EU. I am also an opera singer in Berlin, and HanseMerkur is good and is guaranteed accepted by the ausländerbehörde when you apply for your visa. It's expensive, though, but you're covered for everything. My agent, Dietmar Grabow, speaks perfect English and is super nice! His office is near Alexanderplatz. http://www.hansemerkur.de/web/dietmar.grabow/home
Can anyone recommend an english speaking insurance broker/agent that works with freelancers(preferably in Pberg/Mitte)? Mine seems to have closed up shop. Thanks!

Btw, on their site it says they work with certain branches (like Naturwissenschaftler/Mediziner and so on), but I am a student of Intercultural Communication and my boyfriend studied Multimedia Productions, and they still sit down with us for several hours each year to go over our situation without a problem.

We are also working with Keith Tanner and he's been very, very helpful.
Dear all,
I'm having the worst time with finding a good affordable insurance company... Does anyone have any suggestions of someone I could use? Thanks
Tia R. replied:
Hi Nadia - if you need private insurance (i.e. if you are a freelancer or self-employed) you can contact Keith Tanner, a great Berlin insurance broker who will meet with you for free, walk you through all the options (and prices) and help you sign up. He specializes in helping expats, especially those who need a particular kind of insurance for work permit reasons! His email is keith.tanner@crcie.com. Good luck! Tia from Expath

I don't think health insurance varies so much in their basic prices, but rather in the benefits they offer their clients...With this aspect in mind, I can definitely recommend my health insurance -- BKK Pfalz (public healthcare company) -- they offer up to 150 Euros back each year for things such as a gym membership, or for example, I bought a Garmin GPS running watch and they reimbursed me...all you have to do is go to the dentist and gynecologist once a year...plus you get free teeth cleaning every six months (most health insurances require you to pay for it) and they reimburse you for travel health insurance...mine through HUK Coburg is 10 Euros a year, and BKK Pfalz gives me 15 Euros back just for having it. They are great!
