Evening all, mum Di asks about an OT recommendation, can you help?
Hi There
Are there any recommendations for an OT or other professional in Melbourne to assist my 5yr...

Get a referral from your GP and you'll get a certain amount of sessions low cost or free. We saw a children's OTs at Chattergym in East Hawthorn. http://www.chattergym.com/ As well as having OTs and speech therapists you can see privately, they also do movement groups for little ones etc, and my little guy used to have lots of fun playing on all their equipment after each session.

We saw Robyn Bartram who in the inner city. Found her to be an amazing help to my then 9 year old (ex24 weeker) who was struggling with his writing. We received a referral from his paediatrician.

This may or may not help, but it IS what helped our 26/4 700 g son. We did the OT and the Physio and were told to stop expecting him to achieve as what he could do, was what he would always be able to do. (This was 10+ years ago). Our son is now 16 1/2 and has won the Australian Championships Drum Major's Flourish competition twice (Open and Juvenile). He is currently in New Zealand competing at their National Championships. Drum Majoring is a fine and gross motor skill challenge. Dom's ability with both when he started was VERY bad!!! He started lessons with the Queensland Police Juvenile Pipes and Drums and within 6 months his school teachers where asking "whatever you are doing differently - KEEP DOING IT - as his writing, maths, etc are improving out of sight!". Pipe Bands are also a very cheap way of learning an instrument and learning how to be a part of a team. This is only our experience, but it absolutely has worked for our son! Good Luck!

Hi Di, I'm a paediatric OT and it's definitely a paediatric OT that you would need to see for your little one's fine motor skills. I'm not currently working within private practice so can't help you myself, but going by someone else's recommendation of their recent experience would probably be a good way to go. You can also search for a paediatric OT with experience specifically around hand writing and fine motor skills on the OT Australia website. You select your state and region and area of specialty and it will provide you with a list of currently registered therapists. You can also select certain funding bodies that therapists can provide through if this is relevant to your little one. www.otaus.com.au You also may be able to self refer so perhaps check with the service beforehand which may save you a doctors trip!Hope this helps and good luck Marie-Claire
