HELP! The Catering Services at Road Atlanta have decided to kill our Saturday Night Social parties unless we pay them a fee ($4,000) to host them at the track. Does...
Paul P. replied:
Split the money up that is usually spent on catering/beer and give each race/TT director the money to buy meat, supplies and beer for their class (E30, TR, GTS, AX, Miata, etc). Some of the smaller classes could be combined. There is usually one guy in every race class that has a grill, tent, etc. Race directors could pick up the trophies and hand them out in the smaller setting. Each group could then submit pictures to be posted on the NASA site or FB page. Of course we would expect Jim Pantas and the trophy girls to make rounds to all the groups and hangout a bit.
Bryan C. replied:
Jim Pantas, I have some other ideas for you that might get you around this problem. They are a bit sneaky, just as we like it. Call me 316 251 5109
Work out a deal with Jim Downing he owns Lanier Speedway now.
Bryan C. replied:
I too work in event management as many of your know and I too have seen and dealt with these issues before. I have yet to see a catering contract like this do anything but drive a wedge between the organizations renting the facility and the track management. In a few years, after the caterer has run off all the previous careering business due to jacked up pricing, inflexible working arrangements and poor service/food, a new caterer will come on board OR the track will take it back over and everyone will hit the reset button. Jim Pantas, rent a room/space at a close by country club, hotel, even strip mall/mall. Look for local real estate that is under used. Maybe one of the race shop businesses will host you for a fee. You want to nicely bow out by saying "no thanks" to their services AND take everyone away from the facility for the party. The will notice that the joint is empty at 6 pm Saturday. You'll help the caterer fail, as they always do using these tactics. Good luck!

Bingo, Bryan Cohn.
J.W. S. replied:
Right, Johnny C...so they are essentially acting on behalf of Road Atlanta. Maybe a little pressure from NASA on the right folks with RA would result in a discussion that yields a reduction in that fee.
John H. replied:
Jim, Levy Restaurants?
J.W. S. replied:
Wouldn't Catering Services essentially be the track? After all, they contract with RA, right? In the meetings and events world, this happens a lot. Example? GWCC. Levy Restaurants is the exclusive provider of catering services at the GWCC, and they are uber expensive. End result? Many conferences go elsewhere because of the inflexibility.
Tim H. replied:
Not always a one way street ! Prime example is Lanier National Speedway across the street - without support both ways the track will not be there. And without the track there is no racing. Be fortunate there is a race promoter here at RA to provide such a great facility. Got to make it a win win situation for both for it to work.
