Hi Robin, I actually did graduate from High School. My ex-wife's brother, however, did not, and his story might interest you. Alex brought home a note from his 4 th grade teacher saying he was mildly retarded and would benefit from being in a special class. His mother just ignored it, as she did many things. His 5 th grade teacher wrote to tell his teacher to ignore what the 4 th grade teacher had said. Alex was, she said, having problems in school because he was too smart. He did not learn to read well, because it was boring. The result was that he could not pass his English course in High School, and so he dropped out. The next thing he did was to learn to read. Then he got his GED. Then he got a job pumping gas. The gas station owner saw he had some ability, so he taught him to repair cars, especially transmissions. Alex quickly realized there was more work to be made in other places, so after a year or two, he got a job repairing machine tools. The next thing you know, he was flying all over the East Coast, repairing special equipment. One day, Alex was sent to AT&T Bell Labs to fix a machine there. The manager of the group was a man named Steven Chu. Chu liked Alex and suggested he get more education at the county college for an associate degree, focusing on physics or mechanics. Alex did this, and after he graduated, he went back to Chu and asked what he should do next. Chu said he should get a bachelor's degree. Alex went to Rutgers and got his degree in physics. He graduated number two in his class. He went back to Chu, who said he would hire him if he got a master's degree. Alex went to Fermi Lab and studied there. When he finished, he returned to Chu, who hired him as a particle physics scientist at AT&T Bell Labs. One of the things Alex did there was to work with Chu to write papers on physics. One paper Chu wrote won him a Nobel Prize, and Alex was a co-author. While he was working at AT&T Bell Labs, Alex realized that various companies were charging very high prices for very simple pieces of equipment. Alex knew, from his days repairing tools, that he could make the same pieces for much lower prices. So he left AT&T Bell Labs and started his own business. Today, he has 1300 employees. By the way, he still wears blue jeans, but he wishes he knew more about literature. George
