Diamor jewellers. They are a small shop in the Galleria arcade and have been doing it their whole lives. They have a jeweller and a gemologist. Got my [wifes engagement ring](http://i.imgur.com/SMC4B.jpg) and our wedding rings from there. [They helped me design something custom](http://i.imgur.com/IuiO9.jpg) and it [turned out awesome](http://i.imgur.com/HTlzT.jpg).

[This bloke](http://www.yellowpages.com.au/vic/carlton/rocca-f-j-gold-silversmiths-12665871-listing.html) is a friend of mine, and hand-makes everything from rings to church ornaments. He's being doing it his whole life, and has a cute small shop in Elgin St, Carlton.

We're good family friends with the owners / managers of [Holloway Diamonds](http://www.hollowaydiamonds.com.au), which make very upmarket stuff, and do a lot of custom design (or at least, have done so for us). The quality is second to none and while I can't offer you any kind of special rate, I can promise you that the service (and peace of mind) you'll receive will be outstanding. They're really nice people who genuinely want you to be happy with what you get.

http://dannyleedesigns.com/ The store isn't in the city, but they have absolutely beautiful jewellery, really reasonably priced, and the jeweller (and owner) has lots of experience with design and remodelling! I highly recommend it :)

I had an engagement ring made by John Wood and his son at Montal Jewellers in Mont Albert. Lovely guys who will sit down with you and discuss what you're after. I highly recommend them. http://www.montaljewellers.com.au/

Robert Parker & Sons in swanston st has done all of my family's jewellery (mine, husband, in-laws) and done a fantastic job with creations and repairs and the like. He'll usually do a complimentary cleaning each time you bring something in for him to do.

My friend is a jeweler apprentice at a studio called Xristo on Mill st. in Middle Park. I'm bias but I think they do very good work at a very good price. The owner Christo is a very friendly guy and is always up for a chat. [link](http://www.xristo.com.au/)
