Also Medicaid. When I was in the NewYork-Presbyterian / Weill Cornell Network, I was able to see a great optometrist for 'free'. I'm with NYU now but have not needed to look one up. So that's my recommendation, look up with the hospital network you're under with your PCP. Good Luck!

Costco does the exam for 75. The guy I saw there was so great, and they don't pressure you to buy glasses so I got my script and went to zenni for like 20 dollar glasses lol.

One of my proudest life hacks is to go on Groupon for an eyeglass deal - they often pair the service with an eye exam. I did this maybe 5-6 years ago, but I managed to get an eye exam and a new pair of glasses (nothing fancy) with just $40 out of pocket.

Optical Solutions on Fulton Street in Brooklyn. Cannot recommend highly enough. Family owned, small business, unbelievably nice people. I would just call ahead to make sure they can do whatever you need.
I went to them to repair my glasses, going in I thought it might not be reparable and I would maybe have to buy a new pair. I believe it's a husband and wife that run the business. They were so friendly, and could have easily just asked me to buy a new pair of glasses as I had mentioned that I knew it might not be reparable. He said "let me try to save you some money, I might have a part that can repair the hinge" and went back into his work area for a few minutes. Chatted with the wife and she is the sweetest woman, and they have a pretty awesome cat that came to say hello too.
He came back after about 10 minutes and my glasses were fixed perfectly. They weren't even going to charge me for it, but I insisted. They said "oh ok, you can just owe us ten bucks." I didn't have cash on me, so I offered to pay with card. They said "no don't worry about it, the credit card machine will charge you an extra $5 for the transaction, so for $10 it isn't worth it to use the card. Just come back whenever you have cash and we'll be even." I went back a few days later with a $10 bill.
If their location isn't too far for you, I hope you check them out. They are just a wonderful little business and my brief interaction with them brightened my entire week honestly. Felt really good to support a small business too, even if it was only a few bucks.

Some ophthalmologists do prescriptions for eyeglasses/contacts and usually insurance will cover an ophthalmologist visit. Do you need to get a referral from a PCP? Not to mention, an Ophthalmologist exam is a good thing to have on occasion to be sure of your eye health.
