We used Dr Wright he is fantastic. We had our bub at Cairns Private, it was fantastic n after seeing what some people go through at the base I would definitely go through the private hospital again!

Private is A1. Dr Tom Wright is the best obstetrician by far.

Dr Tom Wright is fantastic. Went public first bub and had a c-section and wasn't happy. Second time went private and had the best experience at the private hospital!! I have heard the base is really good if you have a straight forward pregnancy and labor.

We had Dr Waterfield at the Cairns Private Hospital. He was absoutely amazing! All the midwives were fantastic!! I will never (hopefully) have a baby in the public hospital. My sister had an atrocious birth in a public hospital (atherton not cairns) and after seeing that I signed up for private hospital cover for pregnancy and birth. They do high risk pregnancies there. I've heard good and bad things about Cairns base. But I highly recommend Cairns Private. My husband and mother stayed with me in hospital. The food was great! All nappies, wipes, clothes etc are supplied. The machines are new! It was spotless! I stayed for as long as I wanted and had to ask to leave good luck and I hope you have a wonderful birth!!

I actually had quite a bad experience with Dr. Waterfield... I had ongoing problems, which I later found out was premature labour after visiting the base. Dr Waterfield was unable to detect that and told me that all the problems I had were normal. Plus, in my opinion, he didn't have a very good 'bedside manner.' But that's just my opinion. The base were fantastic, everyone was lovely and on the ball

Dr Thom wright is absolutely amazing I panic alot and he has always been there when I needed anything . I think both hospitals are good but the public system from what I have heard a very strict on visiting hours and partners are not allowed to stay over night. It depends also if you want a private room. But I have seen all 3 dr in cairns I think Natalie is great but expensive, had a bad experience dr Rodger waterfield left me with some pretty nasty scars. Dr wright is cheap and truly amazing and been doing it for a long time you can't even see my c-section scar.

Roger Waterfield ( private ) is amazing has gone above and beyond for me as a gyno and obstetrician

Tom Wright is great would definitely recommend

Cairns Private is very limited - if you are deemed high risk - you will automatically be transferred to the base. There is also no emergent dept at the private. ALL cairns Obs operate out of both - if you call an ambulance you will go to the base. The facilities are actually nicer and newer at the base, and in my experience, the service is the same. Most of the Obs/Gyns in Cairns are fabulous - Tom, Natalie, Roger - Highly recommend (Coming from a 'High Risk' Mum, and a Rehab Specialist for Pre and Post Natal).

I went private and saw Dr Waterfield with both my bubs. I think he is great, his personality won't suit everyone, but I liked how honest and straight down the line he is. Also very experienced, he delivered my first bub safely after a very completed emergency c-section. my c-section scar is very neat and tidy. Private hospital staff are all great.

I had my first with Dr Waterfield and thought he was great until I discovered after the birth that there were many things he hadn't told me. He also suggested an emergency cesarean (when I was 36 hours into labour with no pain relief and in no position to make a decision like that) that I later discovered was totally unnecessary. I'm currently pregnant with my second and seeing Dr Wright on the recommendation of other mum friends.

Whether a certain health professional or birth setting will suit you, really depends on what sort of care you would like and how you'd like to participate in that care. ie. The models of care can be - Authorative - where the woman is comfortable with the HP directing decisions; Partnership - where the woman participates in the decision making process, in conjunction with her HP's; Mother-Led - where the woman discusses decisions with her HP's, then makes the final decisions herself and her HP's will support her in those decisions. Many women think that they have a Partnership model, but they end up with an Authorative model. It's really important to spend a few hours thinking and talking about your options to find a model that suits you. Then working out what sort of steps and skills you need to achieve that. It can be helpful to meet with a doula to chat about your full options and to find a health care provider that suits you: www.fnqbirth.com
