Mechanic Can anyone recommend a good/reliable/non expensive mechanic in Calgary? We're from out of town (Australia) and don't want to get taken for a ride! Thanks in...

To get the best answers you might want to give more details. What kind of work do you need done? What model vehicle?

If you don't mind taking it to somewhere in the NW. Hawkwood auto is a small 5 bay shop and the owner has always been very trustworthy and won't over diagnose things to run the bill up. Steve Walsh is his name. https://www.facebook.com/HawkwoodAutoService/

I always recommend [Shawnee Minute Muffler](https://www.google.ca/maps/place/Shawnee+Minute+Muffler/@50.9234318,-114.0727273,15 z/data=!4 m5!3 m4!1 s0 x0:0 x489 b86 c45 f8176 dc!8 m2!3 d50.9234318!4 d-114.0727273) at Bannister Rd and MacLeod Trail South (same plaza as the Passport office). Easy bridge over the tracks to the Ctrain if that is necessary. Geoff runs that shop, does all general work (other than tires) and I trust him completely.

Trustworthy local mechanic I took my car into the dealership for an oil change and they let me know I had a coolant leak. My temperature gage hasn’t been fluctuating...
Anonymous replied:
There's really only two ways a mechanic (assuming it's the first time he's seen the car) can tell if you have a coolant leak. One is that he saw it leaking/saw coolant on the ground under the car (obviously).
Two, he could have just been commenting that the level was abnormally low. Coolant should not need to be topped up/refilled very often, because it doesn't really get "used up". Depending on how old the vehicle is, and how often you check the levels, that could mean a leak. Check the level once a week for the next few weeks, and maybe once a month after that. (Try and check it when it's approximately the same temperature outside, as it will expand/contract with heat).
If you need to refill it/top it up in the next few months, you have a leak, otherwise you're probably fine.

The fact that you think a small coolant leak means your engine temps will fluctuate shows that you’re probably not the right person to be questioning the legitimacy of the mechanics claims.

Bringing my own oil to an oil change? I’m looking for a location that will allow me to bring my own synthetic oil for an oil change. Anyone know of a shop that will do...
gpuyy replied:
Amsoil fan? Any reputable shop should be fine with this. I’ve had no problems.
dSnugs replied:
Most dealerships will allow you to bring your own oil. If you don't bring enough for the oil change, just note that they'll top up for you and charge you with the amount they used to top up. Just notify them that you will be bringing your own oil when making an appointment. They'll note it on the work order they create for you. They'll charge you for parts and labor, unless you bring a filter yourself as well. I worked for a Ford dealerhsip and lots of customers did this as it was cheaper to bring your own Synthetic Oil. Especially if you pick it up on sale. Also had this done at a Hyundai dealership when I went to get my oil change done.
kwobbler replied:
Only way you will find this is with a backyard mechanic. No large shop is going to allow this. Not sure what kind of oil you have or want but there is very little difference between brands of oil. It all needs to be tested and has an API seal of approval that says the oil meets automotive manufacturers specifications
Anonymous replied:
KIRKHAM AUTO on HORTON RD I bring my own oil and filter and never said anything (howeevr, I rarely go for just an oil change, I tack it onto whatever other issue I am in there for)
ftwanarchy replied:
You won't save a lot. Even if you picked up your synthetic at half price, the lube shop is not going knock much off the oil change price.
TheHappyMTNBiker replied:
Why not just go to a shop that carries the oil you want? Or do it yourself, most vehicles can be changed in 20 minutes or less
dumbledoresarmy3000 replied:
Thank you all for your suggestions! Seems the majority of people agree it’s either not allowed or frowned upon. Frankly, I’m not that worried about which type of oil it is, as long as it’s synthetic and 5 w30 grade. It’s easy enough to call around and confirm that’s the grade they use and then I should be good to go. If anyone has recommendations for places to get the oil change done, let me know! Preferably not dealership or places like Mr. Lube. Thanks again!
I know you said you don’t want to do it yourself but if lifting the car is the reason you can also pick up a fluid extractor that pulls the oil out through the dipstick tube. https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/motomaster-manual-fluid-extractor-6-5-l-0283048 p.html
firebane replied:
Nope won't happen. Same reason as why shops won't let you bring your own parts. Liability.
