The uni recommend Low Wood Club in Windermere which is 2 miles away. Only thing is it's quite expensive even with student discount - http://lowwoodclub.co.uk/club-membership.htm . Or you could use a hotel gym which could be cheaper but you would have to check facilities, http://www.hotelslakedistrict.com/leisure_and_spa/gym_membership.php . Ambleside has a climbing wall and bouldering room which is cheap if you're in to that http://www.amblesideadventure.co.uk/ambleside-wall/ .

The Sands Centre is 5 minutes from Brampton Road and can be used with the university gym membership. It is £75 for one year, £140 for two but there is no current option for three years. Still a great price as it would cost £340 per year if you joined as a non-student
