for quick and dirty, the dr sholes machine at the drug store (or a bunch of other places you may find one) helped me out in a pinch and will likely be cheaper than customizable insoles/inserts. I've heard mix reviews, but they did the trick for me and at least gave me some relief.
I also tried one of those online stores (upstep) where they send you foam, you step on it and ship it back, they send you custom made orthotics. it took a good while and was kind of pricey though, and from what I've learned now your best bet is something like a goodfeet store or asking a podiatrist. The little bit that I learned between the pricey online store and further research I did is that knowing your exact issue (mine is likely low to non existant arches. Along with the hair I like to call them "hobbit feet") is key. Then you can decide what type of insert or support you need and how much money you really want to spend on it.
Sounds like the real deal shoe place you need is goodfeet, I know I'll try them next time my feet bother me and after I get sick of the pricey online store inserts.
