Anybody have any experience/thoughts/comments/reviews they'd like to share on insurance for the horses? We only have one horse at the moment, we are not showing, and we...

People usually use it for emergency or expensive things. It can be tricky if your horse develops a chronic problem that is expensive to treat. However, we insured our horses after seeing a horse rear up and drop dead while being longed (sp.?). Autopsy revealed horse had a stroke. The insurance company paid the claim even though the owners had just bought the horse and had applied for insurance, but not mailed in the check yet. (this was before electronic banking). We currently use Kaplow Insurance. 1-800-823-0201 They have been wonderful to work with, and help you, and your vet make the right decisions for your horses care, from the emergency Thanksgiving morning facial surgery on your weanling or the heart wrenching decision to put down your mare due to incurable and finally untreatable lameness. Many thanks to them for being right there with us, figuratively speaking, of course.

We had it when we had a horse a trainer's barn and she was being hauled to shows, etc. It's not cheap. Surgical insurance alone was over $500 per year (per horse.) Here's the firm in Texas we used. They were very helpful and will even give you quotes. Might want to look at their website just to get more information. http://www.horse-insurance.com/
