make sure who ever you hire is licensed with the state of VA. you can check by going to dpor.va.gov. The easiest way to protect yourself is to hire licensed professionals if they are a tradesman ie hvac plumber electrician they need to be licensed as such. I can refer you to a great HVAC company and a plumber

I just had my entire downstairs refinished and not only was their estimate the best price, the work was amazing. My floors are 27 yrs old and look brand new. Call Kitterell 487-3831 they are in Portsmouth and rates A on Angie's list.
