Funny you ask...We just went through the process and should be closing here shortly. Since we were also new the home buying we went with our realtor's recommendation and used Kevin Salva with [US INSPECT](http://www.usinspect.com/). At first we were hesitant like you, but Kevin was excellent. He was thorough, patient, and answered all of our questions no matter how silly. How thorough you ask? He caught a bee starting to build a small nest on the backyard door frame. Also, Kevin limbo'd his way through the crawlspace and found some serious issues under there. We can thank him enough because the sellers are fixing it all.

I'm sure you'll get a different answer from everyone who responds, but I used [HomeView Inc.](http://homeview-inc.com) when I bought my home on recommendation of my realtor. My inspector was Robert Jennings and he was fantastic. It was my first purchase, and he was extremely thorough and after living in the house for over a year we haven't been surprised by anything. Nice thing was that it was all gone over and I had a PDF with images of the inspection before he even left the property. After watching a bunch of HGTV (apparently once you buy a home that tv channel becomes very interesting) I realized that my inspector was one of the better ones.

Yes, you have to be careful about your realtors' recommendation. In my experience most (if not all) realtors will do whatever it takes to finalize a sale, and usually whatever it takes is not in the buyers best interest.
