The George Robinson painter mentioned in the first picture worked from Saltergate in 1912 ish....

wow good isn't it this facebook lark?...his wife Clara died in 1912 ish so Charles and three of his four children went to live with his father John James Askew at 173 derby road who was also a nottingham born bloke so why they were in chesterfield is a mystery. Charles joined up in 1916 i think (i've screen printed the records and i can't quite remember the detail of it at the moment) from sign up he went to the RGA depot at tynemouth i believe then embarked for France serving as an anti aircraft gunner which i presume mean hours sat doing nothing waiting for a plane to be shot at:) the article above is a tad misleading i think because it implies he died on the way back from france but i do beleive he made it back to chesterfield because in the records is a faded half readable letter from his father John informing people that Charles had died at home (probably inside 173 derby road)
