Looking for recommendations for web designers for a fairly simple web site for a nonprofit organization. I know lots of fabulous graphic designers, but I am out of touch...

A good source http://themeforest.net/category/wordpress
Christina L. replied:
Go with a self-hosted WordPress site (not WordPress.com). There are thousands of free to low cost themes.

What I need is someone to build a site and hand it off to us to make our own updates. I have no idea what web designers are using these days. I'll check out wordpress (that's very confusing that it is not wordpress.com - is that the blogging site?). Thanks for the tip, Christina. Are you doing web design now?
Christina L. replied:
Yes, I'm still doing web design and development. WP was originally just for blogging (I started using it in 2005), but for the past several years it has become a full-fledged content management system. WordPress.com is free, but you cannot have any theme you want, and no plugins which can extend the functions of your website. WordPress.org is where you download the software and install it on your own hosting account. There you can do anything you want. Members/staff can log into the back-end to update existing content, add new content (post or Pages). Each would have their own account and set of permissions (Administrator, Editor, Author, Contributor, Subscriber). What's nice is that the content is stored in a database so if you ever decide to go with a new design aka theme then all that has to be done is install the new theme and activate it. A few items might need to be updated, but that's it.
