LOVE Quepos and Manuel Antonio area. A little further north is Santa Teresa and Samara (but, may be a little too far if you want to spend time in Drakes Bay)

Still rough planning: Train to Mainz. Take www.k-d.com/en/home/ which allows you to get on/off on a day pass. Drink beer. Drink wine. See a castle. Spend night at some cool hotel down the river. Repeat. Repeat. Reach Dusseldorf. Take train to Sweden. In short, somewhat a modified www.ricksteves.com trip along with insights from tripadvisor.
