Please help! I am looking for a GP who would be willing to prescribe me Methotrexate (or an equivalent DMARD) when I turn 18 in April. Due to the nature of the drug my...
Jessica N. replied:
I would suggest you look at going to Dr Lam at Valla Beach, or a qualified naturopath. There are root causes behind all autoimmune disorders and Methotrexate is something I'd avoid personally. I know you've gotta do whatever works but there are other options too:)
Emily A. replied:
I am on Methotrexate,. It's best you see a rheumatologist,.. Dr Bagga is a fantastic specialist,... but if you are having issues there,... maybe have your referral written for the next closest rheumy? Good luck
Sue P. replied:
you will need a specialist, I have RA and I see Dr Wong in Coffs
Megan T. replied:
Dr Bagga is my Rhumatoid specialist if you need it he will give you a script
Linda W. replied:
Dr Bagga is a specialist go see him
Hannahbella N. replied:
Although GPS can prescribe it, they rarely will. Methotrexate is very old and works in a broad spectrum way... it's kills a lot of good with the bad. I've been on it for years and have changed to a more suitable injection that is targeted to destroying only what it needs to. You don't get this kind of ground breaking new technology and care unless you see a specialist - Dr Bagga is the best in the region, med students line up from all over Aus to work with him. You can't beat that kind of care. It's a serious disease and it's not going anywhere, you're young and need a long term plan. If you do go on methotrexate it's best to do it through a specialist also because they monitor all your organs and you can call and email with urgent questions when your immune system starts to shut down from the methotrexate - which will happen and which can be lethal if someone like Dr Bagga doesn't have his eye on you. Just my opinion from someone a few years a head of you who's learnt the hard way. Good luck!
Fez E. replied:
Hi Lisa, I have RA and I see Dr Bagga I take methotrexate and I inject with Enbrel once a week. I have gone into remission after 4 years of hell. My GP is Dr Win at Moonee Beach and he has offered to give me scripts for methotrexate in the past. It's a pretty serious drug and I would think twice about taking it. You will need to have blood tests every 6 weeks to make sure its not damaging your liver.
Frances P. replied:
You don’t need to be 18 to take it, many young kids with Juvenile RA have to take it. Ask for a referral to a rheumatologist, Dr Bagga and Dr Wong are in Coffs, once they prescribe it usually your GP can then prescribe it also.
Cheryl W. replied:

Angela G. replied:
I also have RA and OA. Had been on methotrexate and all Dr Bagga could say was .....that's all we can do for you so keep taking it and in order to qualify for the very very expensive injection to g3 t on the health scheme you need to have Arthritis in at least 20 joints. ... well .... what then...nothing.. so I no longer take it. You know what he said...use it or lose it....:/.

Chronic health issues suck! It’s so hard when you have dreams you want to pursue and you just want to live life your way!!Not here to offer advice you’re getting a lot of frustratingly repetitive advice already. Other than listen to your own body and do what’s best for you I wish you well and hope you find relief from your condition soon
Sarsja R. replied:
Far out Lisa, I dont know how many times you have said you cant see Dr Bagga or the amount of times you have said you have studied the side effects and what not of the drug
Annette R. replied:
I was on Methotrexate but it did not agree with me and made me so sick I am now on placquinal which is a really old drug and it helps with limited side affects. It's best you see a rheumatologist,.. Dr Bagga is a fantastic specialist,. But I also take juice plus in tablet form and it's all natural and it is marvellous if can actually use my hands now since being on it.
