I live an hr south of Cologne - but I have some advice that might help. Look for the word WG (Wohngemeinschaft= shared flats). Most students share a flat. You can find open spots on sites like http://www.wg-gesucht.de/en/ or http://www.studenten-wg.de/K%F6 ln,wg.html. If you're looking for a flat on your own try sites like http://www.immobilienscout24.de/. You could also contact churches (Freie Gemeinde) directly and ask if they can help. Also, remember while searching the net, that we call the city Köln, not Cologne - that might help finding german results. Good luck - and let me know if you have more questions.
