Try Eeescart Nuwareliya Resort (not a resort as the name claims it to be). Very quite and gives that homely atmosphere. 1 km from the town. Check my review on TripAdvisor. Wifi never worked so sufficient data to the rescue. Stamford Star Hotel is good as well. More lively location!

Cheap Accommodation Booking Recommendations I looked on the FAQ pages and didn't see anything about this, but I'll be traveling by myself (29 F) next June and was...
totalnewbie replied:
Well ryokans are the opposite of cheap so you're fine there anyway... My personal preference in looking for accommodation is to first decide WHERE I want to stay. Then, I start looking around for cheap hostels, etc. At the end of the day, rarely will there be a hostel that's terrible. I mean, for 3000 or 4000 JPY a night.. you can't really ask for too much, anyway. To me, the biggest draw of a hostel is socialization and that depends entirely on you, not really the hostel itself.
gdore15 replied:
Booked most using [booking.com](https://booking.com), including hostels. It's nice as they have reviews and easy to book everything at the same place.
I do not think ryokan you deny you a stay for tattoo, but if there is a onsen, you might not be able to use it (so you cannot get access to bath/shower). But if it's a ryokan without onsen and they have shower room that you use for yourself, then tattoo should not be an issue. However, in general hostels are cheaper than ryokan.
Edit : Just came back from a trip, did 5 hostels, 2 ryokan and 2 ryokans with onsen. Booked all hostels and one ryokan with [booking.com](https://booking.com). For ryokan, one was reserved by phone by a friend (no other reservation option), two online on the ryokan website as they have more meal options than on booking websites (if they are on booking websites).
wakattawakaranai replied:
You can search and book capsules and some hostel dorms through [japanican.com](https://japanican.com). I plan to do all my booking through them for our trip next year, so I've been doing research and a LOT of capsules, hostels, and dorms come up.
randomestocelot replied:
If you're travelling solo and prefer a bit more privacy than the average hostel, capsule hotels are decent value. I can thoroughly recommend the Hotel Nine Hours chain for a tourist-friendly experience.
kort677 replied:
have you considered domestic hotel chains like APA? these are "business mans" hotels, very minimalist. small rooms there are literally dozens of locations in tokyo and in most larger cities in japan.
OriginalUsername2639 replied:
Have you tried just using Google? 'Hostel tokyo' (or wherever you are going) and Google should give you its hotel-search option as the first search result. From there > change number of people to 1, sort by price and if need be zoom in on the region your are interested in. Because hostels are usually the cheapest you will see those first, but you may get the occasional hotel mixed in. Google combines reviews from different sources as well, so you get a better view of any place. Plus you can filter on the quality of a place based on the reviews. You can than choose whatever site offers the best price, or choose the one you trust or like to use (I prefer to stay away from certain booking sites after reading their reviews, but that is my personal preference).
edit: Searching via Google instead of directly at sites like Booking might also give you a better price by the way, because these sites know Google (and places like findhotel) compare them to them to other sites, forcing them to be competitive. But your results may vary. [Hotels.com](https://Hotels.com) currently has an 8% off promocode you can use, that saved me a bit of money when [hotels.com](https://hotels.com) was the cheapest site anyway. ebookers also sometimes has discount codes, but not always for all hotels/hostels.

I booked my Tokyo hostel through [agoda.com](https://agoda.com) and got a great rate for an individual annex room instead of a bed in a dormitory. Not every hostel has that as an option, but some do. While looking at hostels I would check the reviews on agoda but I would also check the hostel's reviews on google.

Just got done staying 4 nights at The Millennials in Kyoto. It was actually pretty sweet. I stayed on the coed floor with my girlfriend and we had rooms across from each other. Showering and using the bathrooms was more comfortable than j was expecting. Free beer happy hour from 5:30-6:30. Everyone was friendly and respectful of everyone else's space. Location was incredible too.
joygasmic replied:
What are the bad reviews you're seeing? I can give you more info in a couple weeks once I've actually been on my trip, but I'm 30F traveling solo Nov 25 - Dec 5 and have booked 3 hostels for the trip (with a couple stays at ryokans as treats to myself bc they are not budget.) I'd check with specific ryokan/onsen wrt tattoos and not just write them off entirely, but they're more expensive.
The hostels I've booked with were all in the Lonely Planet guide and have good reviews on HW. It was maybe $30/night for a bed in a female dorm for each of them.
edit: I went back to double check, and all the hostels I booked -- in Osaka and Tokyo, as I have 1 night in a ryokan in hakone and 2 nights in a ryokan in kyoto -- have a 9.0+ rating. I only booked one of them through Hostelworld, though. Another one I booked direct with the Backpackers JP site and another thru my credit card travel portal.
