I stayed in Browside which is 2 miles out of Coniston. Walked in for the swim. Not super cheap but lovely and very reasonable....

Hi Val, there are some very good Indy hostels that are a real treat to stay in... I'd recommend Thorney Howe in Grasmere and Raise Cottage on Dunmail Raise, oh, and The Backpackers in Ambleside. All about £15/night, great food (and beer at Thorney Howe), locations and a genuinely warm welcome from all. Lots of value for money places in the Lakes, you just need to know where to look or ask the right people:)
