Most hostels have guided tours you can take. I stayed at Eco Packers in Cusco and had an awesome time.

I hiked the Inca Trail in April 2013. It was 4 days (3 nights) and I believe 28 miles (could be wrong). We went with a group of 8 random couple's (16 people total). We had 1 English speaking guide and his assistant. And then there must have been another 14 or 16 Porters. If I remember correctly, the only way to hike this trail was with a guided tour as you need a permit and space is limited. Back in 2013 they only allowed 500 people (included Porters) on the trail at one time. It may have changed since then. The tour guide company we used was www.perutreks.com. Good luck.
