If you're going mid october better get your reservations in now. Almost all the hotels book up really fast in October as it's the peak season for fall foliage. There is a hotel in Berlin that is practically right in the middle of some stores, etc. I believe it's called Zinks Inn. Your dad and I stayed there once - it's really nice. Then there's the Carlisle Inn in Walnut Creek. While there are just a few shops right around there, it's really close to get to Berlin and a lot of the stores around there.
