Alan at Allen horse dentist is fantastic, $70 trust, also Gerrard Tracy in CHCH is the best ever but he only travels around chch.

Gerad Tracey is good but I would back Louisa Andrew to the hilt. she does the whole mouth not just the molars that are easy to reach. ask an equine dentist if they do the incisors - majority of them don't

The guy out in Green Island is about the same price as the dental school, but he does a way better job. I can't remember his name but hes at Green Island medical centre and if you emphasise how poor you are he gives you a sweet discount

Louisa Andrew by a country mile. I found out the hard way you get what you pay for with Horse Dentistry, the cheaper the job the less actually gets done. Louisa explained it all so well and let me feel the mouth before and after and wow what an amazing difference! My daughters horses go so much better for her now and they both chilled out so much afterwards. Costs a bit more but worth every penny!!

We use Paul Evans, he's great & will let you have a feel around as well, and then if they need sedated (both of ours do, makes it easier all round) you don't have to call the vet out as well since he is one.

Vets are like GP's. Very limited traning in horse teeth. Louisa explained that in order to get a fully balanced mouth you must do incisor work and balance them with the molars because they work together. Vets pretty much only take off sharp edges, which is a smalll percentage of the mouth. I'd had vets do my horses for years and until I met Louisa none adequately solved the dental problems they had. I'd had Glen and Vet equine and paid the same amount each time as Louisa and she did the most amazing job and the horses have never looked back.

I agree Anna or Peter from Vet Equine Otago..They did the most amazing job of repairing my mares tongue after the dog attack over Easter (see earlier posts or PM me for photos). They are great:)

I agree there Lizzie & Sarah. Paul even knows our Dogs name (he doesn't treat her) and he remembers pretty much everything about Flow & Jimmy on the spot, plus he saved the old pricks life & pulled him through 9 days of colic, have to support them I reccon!

For A Veterinary Dentist have used Anna from Vet Equine and Glenn Beeman from Mountainview Equine. Was happy with both jobs. Vet Equine was $179 on special and Glenn was $150 plus mileage (both were basic files to remove hooks and do bitseats, plus sedation.) Glenn is based in Ashburton and travels down when he has the numbers...

Vet Equine sounds pretty good! It's just for a yearly checkup - haven't had any bitting problems so I don't think it will be a big job... Would $129 be the price for that?

Both Paul Evans and Peter Gillespie and co actually haven't undertaken much in the way of specialised dentistry education. I checked. Louisa showed me terrible ulcers 1 month after my horses were done by Vet Equine, and when I felt the teeth they were still sharp. The difference I felt when Louisa finished was incredible. The Veterinary Association Dentistry Courses are actually in very basic dentistry, I checked this out also as I felt like I had paid a lot of money for a very poor job.

Actually Equine Dentistry goes back as far as the 1700 s! A lot of skilled people died with their knowledge when the motor came along and thousands of horses became redundant hence why it has had to be relearned. Louisa showed me archive footage from a french museum that actually showed a machine which was used for grinding teeth in horses. I'm pretty sure all these 'Specialised Vets' you speak of will have no knowledge of this. Why don't you check for yourselves the Vet Standard taught for dentistry as I have.

Vets have their place, don't get me wrong, but we don't have to pussy foot around when it comes to expecting a good level of skill and service for the top dollar we pay. I'm not bagging anyone, the two I mentioned charged me a lot of money for what they did, and it amounted to the same amount of work done as the guys who work unsedated and charge 50 bucks. I didn't get 'Vet Equine" during winter special time, and it actually cost more than Louisa's job!!

Brendan has also only done the Vet Standard which is only basic. He does the same job as Vet Equine. I checked all these guys out as I think what they charge for the standard of work is not right.

I have used Louisa Andrew for years. I have never come across anyone with as much knowledge of the horses mouth as she has. She measures the mouth width, the size of the tongue, and the height and width of the horses pallet if the horse has mouth or bitting issues. These things vary in every horse and she helped get my head tossing bit chomping mare so comfortable. There is no vet that knows what she does, she is an outstanding horsewomen in her own right and she has invested thousands upon thousands in her education and studied for years. If the dentists who charge 60 bucks and the vets who offer cheap deals had invested as much as she has in their education they would be charging more.

Yes all over Laura, I was down south when I met her. Gave my old boy some fantastic final years, she is just so passionate about it. And Ashleigh, they should be compared, because it is an unregulated industry which means that there is no official standard of work that must be acheived within Equine Dentistry. It was not till I met Louisa and she explained the mouth so well that I understood how much the job you get can vary from person to person.

I certainly would expect to feel my horses teeth/mouth during the dental work, hence i liked Anna from Vet Equine Otago as she let me do that and talked about the patterns of growth and what in the teeth over time to be aware of, and also discussed the pasture and grazing habits my mare will be on. I know run my fingers along my mares teeth when checking her tongue so i will get to know how they feel and any changes.

I've used Anna from Vet Equine too. Not a patch on Louisa.

I go to Donald Murray at Murrays Veterinary Services at Five Roads in Mosgiel. No specific reason other than he is the vet for all our animals, & he has been doing it for a very long time.
