Yeah, it's legit. Usually a lawyer who just wants to make extra cash. You should double-check that your bank will accept a Canadian notary public though. It's possible they might want something [legalized by AB](https://justice.alberta.ca/programs_services/official/Pages/authentication.aspx)

Find out who your MLA is, call their office, and set up an appointment! They can notarize your documents for you (and for free, I believe).
